It seems to me after watching and listening to Harry Potter and several other serial stories I have noticed a few similarites in the succesful ones and the not so succesful in plain english the crappy ones. (Look out Lucas I'm talking about you.)
This will be an ongoing observation so these points will be revisited from time to time and expanded upon as we grow. Now I will be exploring my first observations about sequels and that is: 1) the second (or sequel) movie, book, album, story, etc must remain similar in beat and rhythm with the original. No, I am not saying the sequel should be a direct copy, but a story with the same driving influences as the first, yet with a slightly different set up and pay off. And in some cases just a slight twist on the protaganist's motivation, with an eye to the logical growth of the main and secondary characters will be enough.
The reason why this works is that people want more of the same meal they had at first when they see a sequel, just spiced up a little differently. When the sequel is drastically over spiced, fundamentally changed, or so different that it barely resembles what came before, that's when the audience gets mad and bolts for the door claiming you pulled the old switch-a-roo. How many times as a kid had we fallen for the old switch-a-roo. Promised one thing, a trip to a place we previously enjoyed, to only then to be taken to the cheaper version of it in hopes that we wouldn't notice. Well, we always notice and are really getting tired of it. (Phantom Menance, Attack of the Clones...)
Since this is the first posting I will keep it short and not cite all of the crazy examples that are ripping through my head now... but for those that know me, this is only a gentle reprieve- they will be coming and there will be many. Now get ta writin'

Spinning Tales is a place where many will come to pick up some tricks and hopefully many more will come and leave a few.
