Accepted: Seriously- Just for Laughs
Aug 20, 2006

As I was leaving the movie theater your typical comic-book guy looking geek said to me "...Its no Animal House ." To which I responded. "Its good enough for this generation." We both laughed and left the theater... to which I instantly went and got me a small popcorn, hot dog and soda. The inside concession stand was attened but not opening until fifteen minutes after my movie started so I was going to wait till a slow spot (considering the type of movie this was) and run out and get myself the snacks. Snacks being the other reason I go to the movies (trailers being the third reason) I was very happy to have, had to wait till the end of the film it was that funny.

Accepted starred Justin Long who has been in a few movies I absolutely love Galaxy Quest , Dodgeball and Waiting . Add to that a couple I can pass on namely Jeepers Creepers , Herbie: Fully Loaded just to name a few. But I can definitely add Accepted to the list of keepers. Justin has been lucky in being in several great ensemble driven movies and has proven that he can hold his own as well as still keep you laughing in the moment.

Accepted is anchored by Justin as Bartleby Gaines and winged by Jonah Hill as Sherman Schrader his friend since they were five. Jonah like Justin is a rising comedic talent; he was in '40 year old Virgin' trying to by the fish shoes from the ebay store, and he was also the game geek with the stripper in 'Grandma's Boy' (a movie I was surprised I actually enjoyed on in-demand) I never knew his name, but he was so funny in those two turns and Accepted makes three, rest assured now he will be remembered. Especially since he will be coming up in a few more killer comedies: Evan Almighty , Knocked Up , Super Bad and Rocket Science to name a few. And if his high pitched girly scream or his demand for people to touch his wiener in Accepted ,is any indication of how funny he can be I am going to love seeing him for a long time to come.

New to the comedic acting map: Adam Herschman, Maria Thayer, and Columbus Short round out the rest of Justin Long's team. With Lewis Black acting as the sweeper its "Gooooal!!!" all the way.

Now you might be wondering why I've been talking about the cast so much. Its because they're what makes this movie. The plot is thin, the rival school a tad undeveloped, and the situations' logic is weak; but the jokes are spot on and delivered with a believability that makes you feel like you would have said and done the same thing in their place. That is if you were just ballsy enough to see it through. Very cathartic like Bill Murray's Stripes '' unifying all of us "...mutts..." kicked out, rejected from all the decent countries/schools to land here under a banner of acceptance and understanding in a new place. Making us laugh at the true americans', the flawed ourselves, as we quest for our own grab at the American myth/dream of higher education or development.

Show up for the Characters and stay for the laughs. Accepted is silly, funny, and full of real laughs you just can't pass it up. And if you really want to laugh some more after seeing it; pick up Waiting and the other movies mentioned earlier. In these serious times a good laugh might be all that will keep your sanity.

Seriously, go just for the laughs. TDO
